Our Square Foot Garden

June 18, 2012

Well our gardens are starting to take off, Since we planted in dirt & added compose with peat moss & verticulite, it hasn't been real bad to keep up. pullig weeds out (mostly crab grass) has been very easy.

In our 3x3 garden all 3 tomatoes have been growing. Out of 12 corn all but 2 are coming up. Sunflowers & lettuce didn't not come up. So I have palnted more sunflower seeds on Sunday.

In the 4x4 most squashes are coming up plus more since a rotten pumpkin was mashed ion dirt before we planted. Hubby didn't take out seeds. We will have plenty of pumpkin this year. LOL Radishes are coming up, no onions, carrots, nor beets. have few beans & pea but it's like something is eating them. My guess is the birds for they have gotten most of our strawberries too. Next year get cover!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since we have moved into our home, every Memorial Weekend Vic & I put in our "row" garden. This year, due to the early, warm spring we have been able to start early. During my recovery time & winter months I have been researching gardening & how to do it better. Came across to wonderful books; All New Square Foot Gardening as well as  Vertical-Gardening
So this year we are trying it.Our Square foot Garden
Built Frames
will try to keep a journal of our progress with pictures, I hope.

Here are our frames. Front box is a 3x3 and the back box is a 4x4.

4x4

A look at our 4x4. Vic just used twine to make our grid.

3x3
Here is our 3x3. A personal note here: this is all recycled wood & supplies. Frames came from our neighbor. all other Vic had in his shed. Recycle & reuse is our motto here. Now need a compose. Researching & thinking there too to meet out estate rules. No chicken wire squared off like I wanted to. Lowe's has this one Composer Not getting good remarks. Looked at this one at Steins Garden & Gifts also so we are thinking about it.

Vic getting our walkway ready

First Newspapers

Then a few layers of cardboard

Then adding chips

Much easier to walk between the gardens.

Found this in Birds and Blooms Recycling in the Garden so we are giving this a try too. Feels good to walk on better to get around the gardens.

Herb Garden
This is our herb garden that we started two years ago. I know it really needs work but trying to learn how to do it with out destroying what we have already started & established. Strawberries, Peppermint, Chives & I hope Plantain.

Pinch of this & Pinch of that

Here you see our sections & depending on vergetables you either have one for extra large: Pepper, four for Large: Heads of lettuce, nine for medium: beets, sixteen for small: radishes.See our Dazie girl looking for her vegetables.

Late April 2012

Well April has come & gone. I have my Square Foot Garden Book http://www.squarefootgardening.com/ and I am so ready to get started!
Now we have to find used wood.

Called our building inspector for our township and explained what we are doing. Gave us to 2 construction sites and just asked us to ask the crew to be sure. I so can't wait. Now if the weather would cooperate a bit more so we can go out and look for some of that wood.

Next will be getting my Herb Kit from Learning Herbs and I so can't wait! We have been doing great in all of my small steps. http://www.learningherbs.com/
They have free online educational classes as well as the supermarket Herbalism. So easy to get started. Take it at your pace.

First Item I created was my Laundry soap, which is great! I have used a couple different sites for that & I found liquid or powder are both great. I have them listed on my site. suezeesworld.com I have a few listed that I have tried and I am using. Feel free to stop by. I so can't wait to see what May will finally bring.

April 2012

Well here I am again! Getting stronger Daily. Still can't get over how tired I still get. Like my Darlene Husbands says, "It can take a year or more Suz." Guess he is right for I just can't get past it.
Well I am back at work & had my Ono-on-One with my supervisor & says I am doing great. Was happy to see how strong I came back & got back into the swing of things. Nothing to report or discuss with me. YAHOO!
I know spring is here but waking up to 20 degrees was not fun today. Our poor trees. Fruit & regular are all freezing. No apples this year I am afraid. So waiting to get my Square Foot Garden in! I am so hipped that is isn't funny anymore! Asking yourself, "Waht is Square Foot Garden?" Well check out this site: Square Foot Gardening
Mr Bartholomew has been God sent to me! I have asked myself this for years in all of my attemps in row gardening & pot gardening.
